Frequently Asked Questions - DetailHorticulture Why don't we use 15-gallon trees? It is important to note the size of the trees we recommend for our customers. Trees are the backbone of most landscapes and should be selected carefully. As arborists and horticulturists, we know that the younger a tree is when it is planted, the more healthy it is likely to be in the long run. This improved establishment and health means the young trees also grow more quickly, with 15-gallon trees (our favorite) usually catching up to, and surpassing, 24-inch and larger boxed trees within 2 to 3 years! After those initial years, the younger tree is much more likely to continue to thrive and will always be a better quality tree because of this proactive approach.
